Just outside Ponteareas, in the green Condado wine country of southern Galicia, this house sits on a wooded hillside. Ponteareas is a real, lively town with everything you need day to day, shops, schools, a health centre, markets and cafés, and it’s about 30 minutes from Vigo and its airport, with the Portuguese border and the Rías Baixas coast both within easy reach.

The house is surrounded by forest, which gives it real privacy and a quiet, natural setting. The plot slopes steeply, and that shaped the whole design. Rather than fighting the slope, the architects, the Galician studio MMASA, set the house into the hillside and built it over two levels that step down the hill. This created two flat outdoor spaces: a planted roof garden on top, and a terrace below that opens off the bedrooms. A folded zinc roof follows the line of the land, so the house sits naturally in its setting. The bedrooms face southeast for the light, with a pool to the side.

It was built as a real family home, and it works as one. By solving the difficult plot so well, it went on to win an architecture award.

The essentials: 200 m² of living space, four bedrooms, three bathrooms, on a plot of 1,200 m². Aerothermal heating and cooling (efficient and cheap to run), an equipped kitchen, a garden with automatic irrigation, an infinity pool, a barbecue area and parking.
