Monforte de Lemos

Monforte is the practical town of the Ribeira Sacra’s Lugo side: the canyons are a short drive away, but the town itself sits in a broad inland valley on the river Cabe, at 360 metres, under the hill of San Vicente with its medieval keep and the monastery that is now a Parador. It has city status by royal decree since 1885, granted because the railway had arrived two years earlier and made it a hub; the mid-twentieth-century move of railway operations to Ourense and León then sent it into a long decline. What you see now is a recovery from that, not an unbroken rise — but it is a recovery. Regional press in December 2024 and December 2025 reported the province of Lugo growing thanks to Lugo city, Monforte, Sarria and Ribadeo, while the rural councils around it shrink.

The building everyone photographs is the Colexio de Nosa Señora da Antiga — begun in 1593, not finished until 1913, 110 metres long, Herreran Renaissance and routinely compared to El Escorial. It is still a working school, run by the Escolapians, with a picture gallery worth the visit. Monforte was the seat of the Counts of Lemos, one of the most powerful Galician noble houses in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and its origins go back to the Celtic Lemavos.

The town’s rhythm is the Feira on the 6th and 24th of every month at the Campo da Feira, 08:00–15:00, and a medieval fair over Easter weekend now in its twenty-second year. The daily covered market is small — six stalls of local and organic produce — and we say so plainly.

Health. The Hospital Público de Monforte de Lemos on Calle Corredoira has a 24-hour emergency department and lists cardiology, orthopaedics, dermatology, paediatrics, neurology, psychiatry and radiology among its specialties. The health centre is on Calle Doutor Casares. For a town of this size in inland Galicia this is unusual, and it is the reason Monforte is the base for people buying in Pantón, Sober or the canyons.

Schools. The Colexio de Nosa Señora da Antiga is the famous one; the town has state primary and secondary provision, which we confirm centre by centre when a family asks rather than list here from memory. It is also the judicial seat for its district.

Markets and shops. The fortnightly Feira (6th and 24th), a six-stall daily market, and a council programme of seasonal markets — Christmas, plants and flowers, cheese and cured meats, Samhain, the medieval fair. As a town of 16,000 it has supermarkets and banks; we have not sourced a list.

On the facts, Monforte suits a buyer who wants inland Galicia but is not willing to give up services: a hospital with 24-hour A&E, a mainline station with direct trains to Madrid and Barcelona, secondary education, and a population that is growing rather than shrinking. It is the natural base for someone buying a rural property in the Sil or Miño canyons who wants a town fifteen to twenty-five minutes away.

It suits remote workers who value a train more than an airport, retirees who want hospital proximity, and anyone whose Spanish is good enough to live in a town where English is not a service language.
