Val Miñor
One valley, three municipalities and 45,000 people between the Serra do Galiñeiro and the bay of Baiona — twenty minutes from Vigo’s airport and hospital, with sand where the Baixo Miño has rock. This is where our office is.
At a glance
Vigo’s back garden, with the sea at the bottom.
| What it is | A natural region, not a comarca: the 1997 map of Galicia’s 53 comarcas puts all three municipalities in the comarca of Vigo. A joint mancomunidade (offices in Baiona) runs the shared pool, the fire and emergency group and joint projects. Spelt Val Miñor, Valmiñor (the health service), do Val Miñor (the mancomunidade) and, since August 2026 on Galician Wikipedia, Val de Miñor. |
|---|---|
| Municipalities | Baiona 12,366 · Gondomar 15,109 · Nigrán 18,156 (INE census 2025) — 45,631 people on 143.75 km² (IGE). Foreign residents 1,160, 2.5%: half Tui’s share. |
| Landscape | An amphitheatre: the granite Serra do Galiñeiro (709 m) at the back, the 16-km river Miñor down the middle, the bay of Baiona at the mouth, with the A Ramallosa estuary (a Natura 2000 site of 92.5 ha behind the kilometre-long Praia da Ladeira) between Nigrán and Baiona. |
| Rain | No official station inside the valley. The nearest normals are Vigo airport’s (255 m, inland): 1,791 mm and 129 wet days a year, mean 14.0 °C — a proxy that overstates the coast’s rain. |
| Nearest city | Vigo. Its airport is about 20 km from Nigrán and 28 km / 21 minutes from Baiona; the Álvaro Cunqueiro hospital about 14 minutes from Nigrán and 12 km from Gondomar. |
| Motorway | The AG-57 Puxeiros–Val Miñor, 25 km, tolled, junctions at Ramallosa, Gondomar, Nigrán and Vincios onto Vigo’s ring road and the AP-9. No railway station in any of the three. |
| Not to be confused with | O Baixo Miño. The Miñor is a 16-km stream into the bay of Baiona; the Miño is Galicia’s great river and the Portuguese border. The two comarcas touch along the PO-552 and do not overlap. |

What it is like
The place
The Val Miñor is the valley immediately south of Vigo, and it is where Galicia & Green Spain is based — our office is in Mañufe, a parish of Gondomar. It is a natural region rather than an administrative one: the decree that fixed Galicia’s comarca map in 1997 lists Baiona, Gondomar and Nigrán under Vigo, and the province’s own list of ten comarcas has no Val Miñor in it. What holds the three together instead is geography and a working mancomunidade: one health district, one out-of-hours point, one shared pool, one emergency group, and joint projects like the €7.2 million action plan signed in April 2026 for cycle and footpaths along the river and the coast.
The shape is simple. The Serra do Galiñeiro closes the valley to the east, a granite range rising to 709 m with free-ranging mountain horses and the summer curros of Vincios and Morgadáns; the river Miñor runs 16 km from it to the sea; the Ponte da Ramallosa, a late-Romanesque bridge, joins Nigrán to Baiona across the mouth; and the estuary behind Praia da Ladeira is a protected saltmarsh. Where the Baixo Miño’s coast is rock, this one is the sheltered inner side of the ría de Vigo and the bay of Baiona — sand.
Three municipalities, three different places. Baiona is the historic town: the fishing port, the marina (the Monte Real Club de Yates, founded 1964), the Parador in the old fortress, and the Arribada — the first weekend of March, of international tourist interest, marking the caravel Pinta‘s landfall on 1 March 1493 with news of America. Gondomar is the big, inland, rural one — 74.5 km², the least dense, the youngest by the ageing index, the most industrial (the A Pasaxe estate, 60-odd companies and around 3,000 jobs, with a €33 million expansion under way) and the cheapest. Nigrán is the beach-and-second-home one — the most people, the densest, the richest, the most service-based, and the site of the shared pool, the emergency group and the main health centre.
Getting there and around
One motorway, the AG-57 Puxeiros–Val Miñor: 25 km from Baredo in Baiona up to Vigo’s second ring road and the Rebullón interchange onto the AP-9, with junctions at Ramallosa, Gondomar, a short Nigrán branch and Vincios. It is tolled — the mirror image of the Baixo Miño, where the fast road (the A-55 through Tui) is free and the coast road is the tolled one. A daily commuter into Vigo pays, or takes the PO-552 along the coast. Average daily traffic on the AG-57 was 8,493 vehicles in 2023.
Vigo airport is close: about 20 km from the centre of Nigrán by the council’s own figure, 28 km and about 21 minutes from Baiona. Vigo’s Álvaro Cunqueiro hospital, the reference hospital for the whole health area, is roughly 14 minutes from Nigrán and 12 km from Gondomar. There is no railway station in the valley; the nearest are in Vigo. Portugal is not on the doorstep here — the crossings are in the Baixo Miño, next door.
The ATSA bus runs through Nigrán on the PO-552 and the local roads.
Health, schools, markets
Everyday life
Health. One primary-care district for the three, run from the Centro de Saúde Valmiñor in Nigrán (open 08:00–22:00), with centres in Baiona, Gondomar and Panxón open 08:00–15:00 and the PAC Valmiñor for out-of-hours — weekdays 15:00–08:00, weekends and holidays 24 hours — also in Nigrán, so after three in the afternoon Baiona and upper Gondomar drive. Hospital care is Vigo’s.
Schools. At least one secondary school in each municipality: IES Val Miñor (Nigrán), IES Terra de Turonio and IES Auga da Laxe (Gondomar), IES Primeiro de Marzo (Baiona) — the first and last named from search results rather than their own pages, so check them. Publicly funded enrolment in 2025: Nigrán 886 primary and 701 secondary pupils, Gondomar 610 and 478, Baiona 492 and 401. No international school in the valley; the nearest is O Castro British International School in Vigo.
Shared services. The mancomunidade’s pool in Nigrán (25 × 12.5 m, gym, spa), the emergency group (GES) in Nigrán, and a joint action plan signed 24 April 2026 — €7.2 million, €4.4 million of it EU money, nine projects: river and coastal paths, a cultural building at A Ramallosa, Gondomar’s market and Casa Peralba, Baiona’s waterfront.
What it is known for
- Baiona — the Arribada, the Parador in the Monte Real fortress, the marina, the fishing port.
- Nigrán’s beaches — Panxón, Praia América — and the Ladeira at A Ramallosa.
- The Serra do Galiñeiro and its wild horses; the curros of Vincios and Morgadáns.
- A Pasaxe, Gondomar’s industrial estate — and Gondomar’s rural parishes running up the mountain.
- The Ponte da Ramallosa, the Romanesque bridge that joins Nigrán to Baiona.

Who it suits
On the facts, the Val Miñor suits anyone who wants Vigo’s airport, hospital and jobs within twenty minutes without living in the city: this is Vigo’s dormitory and leisure hinterland, and the numbers say so. It suits families (four institutos, one health district open until ten at night), and it suits people who want the sea on the sheltered side — sand and a marina rather than the open Atlantic.
Which of the three depends on the buyer. Nigrán for beaches, services and second homes, at the highest prices; Baiona for a historic town with a port and a marina; Gondomar for land, space and a younger population at roughly a third of Nigrán’s price per square metre — and it is where we are, so we know its parishes street by street.
It does not suit anyone who wants a free motorway commute (the AG-57 is tolled), a railway station, or Portugal at the end of the road — for those, look one comarca south to the Baixo Miño. And it is not an expatriate enclave: 2.5% foreign residents, half Tui’s share.
What a buyer should know that is not flattering
The honest part
- The motorway is tolled, and there is no train.
- Out-of-hours care is in Nigrán only. After 15:00 the rest of the valley drives.
- The price gradient is steep and the signals disagree. August 2026 asking prices: Nigrán €2,991/m² (+15% on the year), Baiona €2,094 (−4%), Gondomar €1,245 (+1.4%) — commercial listing indices, not transaction data, and two adjoining municipalities pointing in opposite directions, which we would not repeat as a trend without a second source.
- Rain. The nearest official station says 1,791 mm and 129 wet days; the coast is milder than that inland airport station, but no station inside the valley measures it.
- Seasonal. Nigrán’s population is said to triple in summer — a secondary source and an unverified multiplier, but the beach economy is real.
- The name itself is unsettled — four spellings in official use, no administrative standing, and the comarca framework it never belonged to is being repealed in 2026 anyway.
- Even the area is wrong on one official page: the Deputación gives Nigrán 65.23 km²; the statistics institute and everyone else give 34.77. We use the IGE’s.
- Industry is growing in Gondomar — the A Pasaxe expansion is 400,000 m² and 3,500 projected jobs; a buyer near it should know.
