Tui
A small cathedral city on the Miño with Portugal at the end of the bridge, a mainline station in its own parish and the toll-free motorway from Vigo ending in the town — the best-connected place in the Baixo Miño, and the busiest.
At a glance
The town in the comarca that has everything but a beach.
| Where | South of Pontevedra province, on the north bank of the Miño facing Valença do Minho (Portugal); the capital of the comarca of O Baixo Miño. Borders Gondomar, O Porriño, Salceda de Caselas, Salvaterra de Miño and Tomiño. |
|---|---|
| People | 17,468 (INE, 1 January 2025) — the largest of the Baixo Miño municipalities. 5.1% foreign residents, mostly Portuguese. Whether the town is growing or shrinking we could not settle: one source calls 17,306 (around 2010) the peak, which the 2025 figure exceeds. |
| Size | About 67–68 km² (the Deputación says 66.79, Wikipedia 68.3), 12 or 13 parishes depending on the source. Altitude 44 m. |
| Landscape | A river town, not a coastal one: the Miño along the south, the Monte Aloia natural park (746 ha, summit 631 m) rising to the north-west. The nearest beaches are in Oia, Baiona and A Guarda. |
| Rain | About 1,633 mm a year on Tui’s own figure; 1,791 mm at the nearest official station (Vigo airport, 1981–2010). Winters mild and wet; summers rarely above 35 °C. |
| Nearest city | Vigo — 35 km, about 27 minutes. Vigo airport 25 km, about 18 minutes. Porto airport 118 km, about 1 h 05. |
| Portugal | Zero kilometres. The international bridge crosses from the town to Valença; the two have formed a cross-border Eurocity since 2012. |

What it is like
The place
Tui is the town of the Baixo Miño. Where O Rosal is a valley and Tomiño a river plain, Tui is a small city with a cathedral, a walled historic centre and the functions of a comarcal capital: the health service’s primary-care seat for Tui and Tomiño, the secondary school, the weekly market, the diocese. Roman Castellum Tude, a medieval episcopal see, one of the seven provincial capitals of the old Kingdom of Galicia until 1833, and the last Galician city to fall in the Civil War, in August 1936.
The cathedral of Santa María was begun in 1120; its west portal, from around 1225, is cited as an early example of Gothic in Iberia. Below it, the river, and across the river Portugal: the old international bridge — built 1881–1885 and opened on 25 March 1886, two decks, the upper one for the railway, the cost split between the two governments — carries a marked footpath, and Valença’s historic centre is about thirty minutes’ walk from Tui’s. Since 2012 the two towns are formally a Eurocidade, and 5.1% of Tui’s residents are foreign, most of them Portuguese.
Above the town is the Parque Natural do Monte Aloia — Galicia’s first natural park, declared on 4 October 1978: 746 hectares in the Serra do Galiñeiro, more than 80% wooded, eight waymarked trails, six viewpoints, an interpretation centre in the old forestry house and a Galaico-Roman walled enclosure near the summit at 631 m. And Tui is the standard Spanish starting point of the Camiño Portugués — the last hundred-odd kilometres to Santiago — which gives the town a pilgrim and hospitality economy that runs through the year rather than only in August.
Getting there and around
The best-connected municipality in these guides after Vigo. The toll-free A-55 motorway runs 32 km from central Vigo to the Portuguese border and ends in Tui; Vigo is about 35 km and 27 minutes, Vigo airport about 25 km and 18 minutes, Porto airport 118 km and about 1 h 05 by the Portuguese motorway.
The Baixo Miño’s only railway station is in Tui’s own parish of Guillarei: an Adif station on the Monforte de Lemos–Redondela line with direct regional trains to Vigo, Ourense, Ponferrada and León and the connection towards northern Portugal. It is a separate parish, not the town centre — check the distance before you assume you can walk to the train. Adif has been re-signalling the Redondela–As Gándaras section and reorganising the tracks at Tui as part of the Atlantic Rail Corridor works, with services suspended and replaced by buses on some weekends in 2026.
Into Portugal by road, the bridge is in the town. The LUGOVE bus serves the Vigo–A Guarda route through Tui on its inland variant.
Health, schools, markets
Everyday life
Health. The fullest cover in the Baixo Miño. The Centro de Saúde de Tui (Rúa Alcalde Casal Aboy 4) opens 08:00–22:00, and the same address hosts the comarca’s only Punto de Atención Continuada open Monday to Saturday 15:00–08:00 and all day on Sundays and holidays — the out-of-hours point the other municipalities drive to. Tui sits in the Vigo health area; hospital care is in Vigo.
Schools. IES San Paio is the secondary school (Rúa Casal Aboy 11). Ten educational centres in the municipality signed a joint agreement on phones and screens, which tells you the number; the full list we have not confirmed centre by centre. There is no international school in the comarca — the nearest is O Castro British International School in Vigo, 25–35 km.
Market and shops. The Mercado dos Xoves, every Thursday 09:00–14:00 on Rúa Mártires de Sobredo by the Recinto Ferial. As the comarcal capital, Tui is where the Baixo Miño’s shops and banks concentrate; we have not sourced a list of chains and would check it on the ground.
What it is known for
- The cathedral of Santa María (from 1120), the convents of Santo Domingo, San Francisco and the Clarisas, and the walled old town above the river.
- The international bridge to Valença (1886) and the Eurocidade Tui–Valença (2012).
- The Camiño Portugués — Tui is where most pilgrims on the Portuguese Way start their Spanish hundred kilometres.
- San Telmo — the town’s festival, of Galician tourist interest, from Holy Saturday to Easter Monday, with roots documented from 1578 and the Festa Popular do Meixón built around the Miño’s elvers. The river’s lamprey and shad are the other specialities.
- Monte Aloia, Galicia’s first natural park, and a place on the list of fourteen municipalities working towards Starlight dark-sky certification.

Who it suits
On the facts, Tui suits families and anyone who wants a town rather than a hamlet: a secondary school, around ten schools in all, a health centre open until ten at night and the comarca’s only 24-hour out-of-hours point, a weekly market, a cathedral and a historic centre with 17,000 people around it.
It suits anyone who needs to travel — the airport at 18 minutes, Vigo at 27, Porto’s airport at an hour, a mainline station inside the municipality and a toll-free motorway that ends in the town — and cross-border households, for whom Portugal is the far end of a bridge rather than a journey. It suits buyers who want the year-round pilgrim economy rather than a beach season.
It does not suit anyone who wants sea frontage — Tui is inland, and the beaches are a drive west — or anyone looking for quiet: of the Baixo Miño’s five municipalities, this is the busiest.
What a buyer should know that is not flattering
The honest part
- Rain. About 1,633 mm a year by Tui’s own figure, 1,791 mm at the nearest official station; the winters are mild and wet.
- No coast. A river town; the beaches are in Oia, Baiona and A Guarda.
- Through-traffic. Tui is at once the end of the A-55, the road and rail crossing into Portugal and the start of the busiest Camino into Galicia after the French Way. That is trade, and it is volume.
- The trains are being worked on. Guillarei–Redondela and Vigo Guixar works have suspended services on some 2026 weekends with replacement buses; check the works programme before relying on the line.
- The station is Guillarei, not the centre — a separate parish of Tui.
- The population trend is not clean in the published figures — a “2010 peak” of 17,306 sits beside a higher 2025 count — so we do not tell you Tui is growing or shrinking.
- The big festival moves with Easter; it is not a summer draw.
- The wine claim needs care. Whether Tui is inside the Condado do Tea subzone depends on which official text you read (the 1997 BOE regulation does not name it; Turismo de Galicia does); the parish of Pexegueiro is inside the O Rosal subzone. We say so rather than print the bottle label.
- Even the basic figures disagree between official sources — 12 or 13 parishes, 66.79 or 68.3 km².
